Altar Team

  • Role: Crucifer
    Lead altar procession from the back of the church to the Sanctuary.
    Take cross to sanctuary, bow place cross in the holder. Return to the chancel steps. 
    At offertory take the cross to the back of the church and lead the offertory party to the sanctuary, place cross in the holder, return to the sanctuary - close altar rail. 
    During the recessional hymn, take up the cross and be ready behind the priest as final Blessing  is said. Process out smartly waiting for other servers to join behind from chancel steps.
    You may or may not be on the rota to assist with Holy Communion.
     
  • Role: Acolytes
    Make sure stands are set each side of the altar and also at the back of the church.
    Light candles at the start of the service.
    Process in just behind the crucifer or if the Book of the Gospels is being carried, process in close to this, and side by side - Lighting the Word.
    Follow crucifer to the sanctuary leaving space for the crucifer to step back to replace the cross. Move into the sanctuary and place candles either side of the altar. Bow to altar and turn together, returning to the chancel steps.
    Gospel Procession. Return to the sanctuary with Gospel Carrier and accompany the Gospel Procession walking a few steps behind the Gospel carrier.
    Wait for the minister to step out in front of the procession. Stand facing to west of the church either side of the Gospel Carrier. At the end of the Gospel reading turn and return with the Gospel Carrier to the sanctuary. Replace candles either side of the altar. Return to the chancel steps.
    Recessional. Accompany crucifer to sanctuary and wait either side for the final Blessing and then move smartly down giving time for the servers and ministers to join the procession.
    You may or may not be on the rota to assist with Holy Communion.
     
  • Role: Gospel Carrier
    Make sure the lectionary reading is marked at the start of the service.
    Process behind the crucifer and with the acolytes either side. Hold the Book of the Gospels up high.
    Wait with the altar party at sanctuary, bow and then place the Book of the Gospels on the altar.
    Gospel Procession. Collect the Book of the Gospels in good time to be in the centre of the church by the end of the offertory hymn.
    Process with the acolytes allowing space for them to stand either side (or just behind) the Book of the Gospels, facing west.
    Open and hold the book for the minister.
    At  the end of the gospel reading, turn and return with the acolytes to the sanctuary. Replace book and return to the chancel steps with the acolytes.
    You may or may not be on the rota to assist with Holy Communion.
     
  • Role: Altar Server MC
    Your main responsibility is to set up the altar, make sure other servers know their role and can help you as required.
    Be ready to assist the priest at the altar, to offer lavabo bowl for minister to wash hands, receive vessels from the altar and to assist with the ablutions at the end of Holy Communion.
    Make sure the Book of the Gospels is marked for Lectionary Reading.
    At the end of the service ensure everything is washed up and put away after the service and de humidifier is left charging in the Vestry.
    Light altar candles and extinguish at the end of the service. Replace if necessary before the next service. Put altar books away. Make sure safe is locked before leaving. Change Aumbrey candle. Make sure cloth is covering the altar and candles and cross are on altar.
    You may or may not be on the rota to assist with Holy Communion.
     
  • Role: Altar Server
    Your main role is to assist the MC in setting up and clearing up at the end of the service.
    Make sure chairs are out for minister and servers and all have service book and hymn books.
    Assist priest in the sanctuary with MC.
    Depending on numbers of servers be ready to receive the offertory plate or wine and water  from the offertory party.
    Whoever receives the offertory should make a note of communicants and make this known to the minister or MC.
    You may or may not be on the rota to assist with Holy Communion.
     
  • Role: Eucharistic Minister
    If two altar servers are on duty then come up with the offertory party and return after the distribution of Holy Communion.
    If one alter server/crucifer on duty, come up with the minister, bow and enter sanctuary.
    Be ready to take offertory and wine and water.
    Once server has come back into the sanctuary swap roles and be ready to administer Holy Communion.
    If you are the only Eucharistic Minister come up with ministers, bow and enter the sanctuary and remain until after the ablutions. See role of MC and Alter Server for setting up and serving at the altar.
